In October 1999, after about eighty years in repose, the Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador, a land of volcanoes, was on orange alert, one notch down from the most dangerous—red alert—threatening a major eruption. More than thirty thousand people live in the area at the foot of the volcano. I called the IDNDR (International Decade for Natural Disasters Reduction), a UN agency, also based in Geneva, to tell them about this eruption and to suggest that I travel to Ecuador to consult with the local scientists.

I try to read my New York Review of Books. It arrives regularly, though usually six weeks out of date. The contrast between its exquisitely honed intellectual, New York sensibility and the realities of my daily life is a source of fascination and frustration. Its esoteric obscurity often infuriates me: Are these issues that intelligent people should be worrying about? I am strangely drawn to the idea of a space where ideas matter and where writers and readers engage fiercely and passionately. I turn first, as always, to the personal ads, which are full of tall, beautiful, smart, witty, elegant, successful, intelligent women whom I shall never meet.
