There are certainly medieval references to poets and works of which we now have no trace, and many of the early medieval texts which modern critics most admire survive in only single or lacunary manuscripts. Although the usual shape of a history is that of a narrative that advances forwards through time, the nature of the material in medieval literary history exposes the extent to which that is a fiction, since in composing it, we are in fact constantly drawing inferences backwards from textual remains that are always later, and often very much later, than the works they record.

The troubadours, for example, composed in a literary language now called Occitan (in recognition of their native oc), formerly referred to as ‘Provençal’, which seems to be a standardized form of the Limoges dialect; but they enjoyed careers in Spain, Portugal, northern Italy, northern France, and even overview of the period 23 England. Either audiences over a remarkably wide geographical area could understand troubadour songs, or they didn’t care if they couldn’t follow the words, and merely drank in the music and the glamour.
