In some regions in the early post-contact period it is possible that Aboriginal peoples were disinclined even to offer violence to whites because they were outside Aboriginal society. Others attempted to deal with white incursions by use of such traditional means as sorcery and pre-arranged battle. Neither was effective, for obvious reasons. In an attempt to explain to themselves the presence and actions of white settlers, some Aboriginal peoples assumed them to be returned ancestors and even assigned them the names of former members of the group – how else did one justify their obvious assumption of territorial prerogatives?

It was disbanded in 1855, but the region was by no means pacified and various units of Native Mounted Police were set up and run by the squatters at their own expense and with minimal direction from Sydney. After separation of the colony in 1859, the new government of Queensland instituted an inquiry into the native forces, and the Native Police was placed on a more regular footing under the Police Act of 1863. The force had its headquarters near Rockhampton, and deployed 137 all ranks in fourteen detachments across the colony.
