At first I was very flattered, the thought of heading a company was nice, even though it was not really practical at the time. Beneath the flattered front I knew I was still far too inexperienced in my field to run this company, but, for all the wrong reasons, I felt that I should give it a go. For the next month my mind was filled with nothing else. I looked deeply into the premise of the company, and my ability to run it. The more I looked the more I realised I was out of my depth. It wasn’t that I was scared to take on the job, it was just that at that time I was grossly and obviously under-qualified and under-experienced.

On one occasion, training for my second Dan black belt in Shotokan Karate, I was hitting the gym three times a day, working a full-time job and managing a family, all at the same time. I lost a stone in weight without even realising and became (not for the first time) clinically depressed. So much so that my doctor tried to put me on antidepressants. This was probably the lowest point of my life. I was so stressed and depressed (the two seem to go hand in hand) that I felt there was nothing to live for.

These added stressors don’t need to be huge to over balance you. It could be something as simple as a minor dispute with a neighbour, perhaps the tax bill arrives, maybe you’re given extra responsibility at work, it could be anything. Suddenly you have more on your cart than the wheels can take. 35 A BOOK FOR THE SERIOUSLY STRESSED If you were working at the positive side of the inverted U (numbers 2, 3 or 4) these extra stressors, though still perhaps unwanted, would be quite manageable. But because you’re at the peak and already working to your limit they knock you right over the edge and you struggle to cope.
