At first I was very flattered, the thought of heading a company was nice, even though it was not really practical at the time. For the next month my mind was filled with nothing else. I looked deeply into the premise of the company, and my ability to run it. The more I looked the more I realised I was out of my depth. It wasn’t that I was scared to take on the job, it was just that at that time I was grossly and obviously under-qualified and under-experienced.
On one occasion, training for my second Dan black belt in Shotokan Karate, I was hitting the gym three times a day, working a full-time job and managing a family, all at the same time. I lost a stone in weight without even realising and became (not for the first time) clinically depressed. So much so that my doctor tried to put me on antidepressants.
